Save-the-dates
While save-the-date notices aren’t a critical part of your wedding invitation suite, they are absolutely necessary if you’re planning a destination or holiday-weekend wedding. You want to give your guests ample time to plan or save money so they can attend and, especially, to mark off the date in case another wedding comes along. Generally you want to send your save-the-date six to nine months before your wedding. If you’ve created a B-list guest list (a list of people you are still unsure about inviting), do not send these people a save-the-date since then you’ll be obligated to send them an invitation as well. Information you’ll definitely want to include on the save-the-date are your names, the wedding date, the wedding location (not necessarily the venue if it hasn’t been locked down yet), and a wedding website if you plan to have one.
Some experts disagree on whether or not the save-the-date should match the invitation in design or formality, but we like to think of it as a chance to do something really fun, especially if the invitation itself is going to be formal. Save-the-dates are a great way to get your guests excited, so play up the location or theme of the wedding! If you’re getting married at a beach location, maybe you’ll want to send a small bottle of sand with the save-the-date attached; for a camp-themed wedding, a small box with a toy compass inside would be fun. It can even be as simple as a “Greetings from . . .” postcard. This is your chance to do something memorable.
